Childhood...

      Darren Sonal Tranchell was born in Colombo, Sri Lanka, on 14 July 2011 and is a student of Asian International School, where he has studied since Montessori. At the age of 12, Sonal discovered his passion for rowing, a sport that quickly became a central part of his life. Since then, he has dedicated countless hours to training, competition, and personal development, demonstrating a level of commitment and discipline beyond his years.

In addition to rowing, Sonal actively participates in swimming, shot put, discus throw, and powerlifting. His involvement in multiple sports has helped him develop strength, endurance, resilience, and a strong competitive mindset. Alongside his sporting commitments, Sonal continues to maintain a solid academic record, successfully balancing the demands of school and high-performance sport.

How it all began...

Sonal's rowing journey progressed rapidly when he successfully passed the national ergometer selection trials and earned a place in the Sri Lanka National Development Rowing Pool at the age of 12. During this period, he trained under renowned Spanish rowing coach Pedro Sanz, gaining valuable experience and exposure to high-performance rowing.

His dedication and potential also earned him an invitation from Howard Croker, Founder and Owner of Croker Oars, one of the world's leading rowing equipment manufacturers. Sonal has since participated in two specialised training camps under Howard's guidance, further developing his technical skills and understanding of the sport.

Shaping a champion...

Today, Sonal continues to train under the guidance of his school rowing coach, Sanjeewa Guruge, whose unwavering support, mentorship, and dedication have been instrumental in his athletic development. As a coach and mentor, Coach Sanjeewa has consistently encouraged Sonal to push beyond his limits and pursue excellence, helping him stay focused on his long-term ambitions in rowing.

Representing Sri Lanka on the international stage, Sonal competed at the Asian Rowing Cup in Korea in 2026, an important milestone in his rowing journey. Demonstrating his determination and competitive spirit, he secured a first-place finish in the Final B of his event. He has also achieved success internationally by winning events at the Taree Summer Regatta in Australia, gaining valuable racing experience against international competitors.

Ambitions...

Known for his determination, positive attitude, and willingness to learn, Sonal approaches every challenge as an opportunity to grow both as an athlete and as a person. Beyond competition, Sonal is passionate about inspiring other young athletes through hard work, perseverance, and sportsmanship. He believes that success is built through dedication, consistency, and a willingness to embrace challenges both on and off the water.

As he continues his development as a junior athlete, Sonal's ambitions extend to representing Sri Lanka at the highest levels of international rowing, including the World Rowing Championships and the Olympic Games. He also hopes to pursue a successful career in aviation.

With strong faith in God, unwavering family support, dedicated coaches, and a determination to improve every day, Sonal remains focused on pursuing excellence both on and off the water. Guided by discipline, humility, perseverance, and a lifelong passion for sport, he continues to work towards his dream of representing Sri Lanka at the highest levels of rowing while building a successful future in aviation.
